Rover 2.0 Petrol Engine Variants

The second generation Rover 420 2.0 petrol engines Series used the T series petrol engine produced by Rover. The T series has a bore of 84.45 mm (3.325 in) and a stroke of 89 mm (3.5 in). Developed out of the M-Series (M16), that was used for the original Rover 800 series, this engine in turn was a development of the O-Series dating back to the original BMC B-Series engine as found in the MGB.

The Rover 2.0l engine is capable of substantially more power than it provides for the Rover 420, its limiting factor is the gearbox which cannot handle the torque.
Rover restricted the power of the engine electronically. The real torque capability of the engine can be restored by removing the electronic limiter unit and replacing it with a boost controller, and fitting of an up rated gearbox bearing.

The Rover 2.0 petrol engine displaces 1,998 cc(cu in) as a 16 valve DOHC:- Engine Code: T16(16V)

Rover 2.0 Diesel Engine Variants

Derived from the Perkins Prima engine, the L-Series engine started in production from January 1995, it was the first Rover designed and manufactured direct injection diesel for use in Rover Cars.

The Perkins Prima engine used in the Austin Montego, Austin Maestro, the Leyland Sherpa van and LDV. The L series is extremely versatile and has been fitted in the Land Rover Freelander, Rover 200 Mk3, Rover 400 Mk2, Rover 600, European versions of the Honda Accord and the Honda Civic.
It has been successfully tuned to produce much higher power than standard. A development of the L series engine (The G-Series) featuring a modern common-rail fuel injection system was underway when MG-Rover ceased production, but the company's closure prevented it from being fully developed and released.

There are a number of versions of this engine:-

    The SD and SLD available in Rover 200 and Rover 400 models is a non-inter cooled, mechanically controlled fuel injection system.
    The SDi and SLDi was fitted to the Rover 200, Rover 400 and Rover 600 models, it is inter cooled and fitted with an electronically controlled fuel injection system.
    The last version used in the later Rover 25, Rover 45, MG ZR, and MG ZS, is also inter cooled and electronically controlled. The injection system is more advanced and produces more torque. The engine produces the same power output as the SDi models.

The engine is a conventional 4-cylinder with 2 valves per cylinder, it operates a single overhead camshaft with hydraulic tappets. The cast iron engine block is fitted with an aluminum alloy head and sump. A fully modulated, either air or water-cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system is incorporated into the intake/exhaust system.

All versions use Bosch fuel injection equipment of various designs, sensors around the engine consistently give feedback to the ECU regarding injection timing, engine speed, load, fuel and coolant temperature, boost pressure etc. ensuring that optimum running conditions are maintained. All accessories (PAS, air con, water pump, vacuum pump, alternator) are driven off a single poly-vee-belt drive with autotensioner. Camshaft and injection pump drives are via two multi-toothed belts with either automatic or manual tensioners.
